In this Split Seconds, Tim chooses what he believes to be the most influential watches of the past half decade. He covers the Ressence Type 2 e-Crown, Breitling Superocean Heritage Chronoworks, F.P. Journe Elegante, Panerai ID Lab, and the Zenith Defy Lab. For the full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih1xXkTr6IY In the full episode, Tim confirms that there is more to collecting than Rolex watches. In one of our most sweeping and ambitious Monday Mailbag programs for luxury watch buyers, we’re focusing on the nuances of high horology watch finish, discussing whether a tourbillon is a watch complication, considering the most innovative watches of the last five years, clarifying the difference between Lange and Lang as they relate to watches, and listing our favorite luxury alarm watches. First, we open with a new feature: Batting Practice. Tim discusses the difference between frequently confused German watchmakers A. Lange & Sohne of Glashutte and Lang & Heyne of Dresden. Part of the Richemont Group since 2000, A. Lange & Sohne is the renowned manufacturer of models including the Lange 1, Datograph, and Zeitwerk. Lang & Heyne is a family-owned watch brand run by AHCI luminary Marco Lang. It builds watches including the Albert monopusher chronograph, Anton tourbillon, and the Georg rectangular watch. We discuss our favorite alarm watches; Tim prefers the sophisticated Ulysse Nardin Sonata, the Glashutte Original Senator Diary, and the Blancpain GMT Reveil. A user requests a list of luxury watch brands that produce upper echelon watch finish but rarely receive recognition; we like Romain Gauthier, Aaron Bexei, the Gronefeld brothers of Holland, Grand Seiko’s Credor sub-brand, and yes, Lang & Heyne. The subject of tourbillon watches arises in connection with a worthwhile question; is a tourbillon a watch complication or a refinement? Tim discusses the opinions of noted industry experts including Michael Friedman of Audemars Piguet and Antiquorum founder Osvaldo Patrizzi while including his own analysis and opinion. Following a discussion over dinner with Wei Koh of Revolution Magazine, Tim is inspired to answer the question, “what were the most innovative luxury watches of the last half-decade?” While numerous suggestions including the FP Journe Vagabondage III, Audemars Piguet Supersonnerie, and Baume & Mercier Clifton Baumatic were mooted, Tim had other ideas. Tonight, he discusses the Zenith Defy Lab, the F.P. Journe Elegante 48, the Brietling SuperOcean Heritage Chronoworks, the Panerai Luminor 1950 Carbotech ID-LAB PAM 700, and the Ressence Type 2 E-Crown concept from SIHH 2018. All of this plus wrist shots from our global audience of luxury watch collectors and live questions from our viewers tonight on Monday Mailbag. Stay tuned for Tim's views on the luxury watch news of the week and remember to like, comment, and subscribe for more great content from WatchBox Studios. The AP Royal Oak Pride of Italy is a limited edition piece, just one of 500 watches. This Royal Oak was released in 2015 to celebrate Milan and Italy hosting the Universal Exhibition. The Exhibition gave a window into the beauty and way of life of the Bel Paese. The watch features distinct silver and navy blue which reference color preferred by the Italian collectors market. Even though the chronograph is 41mm, the cushion case and slim 11mm thick case allow it to slide under the cuff of a shirt. The chronograph also makes this watch a perfect sports watch and it has a water resistance of 50m. The beautiful watch features a column wheel and vertical clutch system. This allows the seconds to be run continuously without damaging the movement, as long as there is remaining power reserve.
