Samsung Galaxy A8+ Plus (2018) - 5 Reasons to Buy

Subscribe to Mobiscrub: Samsung Galaxy A8 plus Price in India: INR 32,999 (64 GB) Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus specifications: OS: Android 7.1.1 Nougat Processor: Octa-core (2x2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 & 6x1.6 GHz Cortex-A53) Dual SIM: Yes 4G ready: Yes External memory: Yes, microSD up to 256 GB RAM: 6 GB Memory: 64GB Camera: 16 MP, f/1.7, autofocus, LED (dual tone) flash, Video: 1080p@30fps Front camera: Dual: 16 MP + 8 MP, f/1.9, 1080p Battery: 3,500 non-removable Thickness: 8.3 mm Weight: 191 gms Display: 6 inches, Super AMOLED Screen resolution: 1080 x 2220 pixels Bluetooth: Yes, v5.0 Fingerprint: Yes Body design: Unibody Charging port: Type C FM Radio: Yes First, the display. Samsung has always excelled on the display side of things and the A8 plus is no exception. A massive 6 inch super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 pixels by 2220 pixels that lends the device a fluid 18.5:9 screen ratio which you get with the flagships such as the Galaxy S8 and the Note 8. The colors are punchy, the screen is bright and the 6 inch display is a wide-screen experience that only the best of Samsung phones offer at the moment. Second is the design. The Galaxy A8 plus is like the something borrowed of the Galaxy S8 design. They’ve trimmed the bezels a lot more from the earlier A8 and tried to give the A8 plus the same infinity look like the S8. I love the glass back – which is currently only available in the note 8 and the S8 – and now in the Galaxy A8 plus framed in a nice looking aluminum frame. It looks amazing, very rich and looks even better on the black color. And, this is the first Samsung device to feature the fingerprint scanner at the back below the camera which is a lot more conveniently placed now Third is the camera. The A8 plus has a 16 MP F/1.7 primary camera with LED flash and allows you to shoot full HD videos and in the front you have a dual camera set up which is again the first to feature in a Samsung smartphone. With the dual lens set up, you are able to take selfies with a nice background blur and there aren’t really any phones in the smartphone market at the moment which have this set up which works as beautifully as it does with the A8 plus. Some phones can achieve the same effect with their camera software, however, the A8 plus does it more naturally with the dual camera set up. Fourth is the fact that the device is IP 68 certified – which means it is dust and water resistant. Not a lot of smartphones in this price range offer this feature and hence it becomes a big reason to own this smartphone in this price range if you are looking for a more sturdy phone for the careless person that you are. Lastly – the price. The Galaxy A8 plus is priced at INR 32,999 and offers you octa core processing power with 6 GB of RAM, an immersive 6 inch viewing experience with an ultra-sharp 18.5:9 wide display and it comes with 3,500 mAh battery which is going to last you longer than the Galaxy S8 or the Galaxy note 8 battery. You also get to have the first Samsung smartphone with the front facing dual lens camera set up which takes the most dramatic selfies and you are going to simply love using the front camera! You also get a phone that’s water and dust resistant which means a much more sturdy phone than any other phone in that price range. The other competing phones in this price range are the OnePlus 5T and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 which you might want to check out too before making a decision. Samsung Galaxy A8 star has a beautiful build and desk. At the back you get a beautiful glass finish. The white color looks like a really neat piece of marble. Of course, it’s just glass and that gives it a really nice sophisticated classy look. It also means it is more prone to crack and fingerprint smudges - but white color is the safest when it comes to fingerprint smudges as they are least visible.

The Galaxy A8 star body is really slim and sleek for a device that has a 6.3 inch large display and it really feels close to the flagships like the Galaxy S8 plus, S9 Plus and the Note 9 given the choice of material- which is a great compliment.

The Galaxy A8 star has a monstrous 3,700 mAh which is pretty kick-ass capacity. Given it has a Snapdragon 660, the 3,700 mAh battery will easily last you the entire day without dying on you. Be assured, with moderate to high use the battery will last you all the way from morning to the night.

The display on the Galaxy A8 star is phenomenal too. It sports a massive 6.3 inch Super AMOLED display with an impressive resolution of 1080 x 2220 pixels. Vivid punchy colors, with really deep blacks and high contrast. Super AMOLED, like always, have eye popping colors and some love it, some hate it.

The front facing camera has a 24 MP sensor with aperture f/2.0. That implies you get beautiful and sharp looking selfies. The front camera also has selfie focus, so you get selfies with a decent background blur.

The processor in the Galaxy A8 star is not as impressive though. While the performance is not bad at all, the A8 star comes with a mediocre Snapdragon 660. It is an octa core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz, it is better than the Snapdragon 450 but still not as good as the Snapdragon 845. Devices like the OnePlus 6 which costs the same, offers Snapdragon 845 and even the Asus Zenfone 5Z that is 10% cheaper than the A8 star, comes with Snapdragon 845 - so, it is difficult to imagine why Samsung wouldn’t offer the same high performance processor when it costs nearly the same.

Also, lack of OIS/EIS in the rear camera is disappointing. Asus Zenfone offers EIS while OnePlus 6 offers OIS in their dual camera setups. However, the Galaxy A8 star supports neither and that’s a miss.

Lastly, PRICE. And that’s a big one, but also a tricky one. While the Galaxy A8 star may not be value for money, it is however, Samsung. They offer a more reliable handset which can last you longer than other manufacturers, they offer voice based AI which others don’t offer in this segment including the OnePlus and it offers a much more extensive and responsible customer service.

Overall, it’s a decent phone. Good performance, good display, ok-ish camera, pretty good front camera, great build and design and an amazing battery life. However, the device might not seem like value for money for some and some might feel comfortable spending extra to have a phone from Samsung. But after the Samsung Galaxy S8, this is probably the device to get if you’re looking for a Samsung phone only.
