How to Take Care of your Waterproof Breathable Jacket

How to Wash a Waterproof Taking care of your waterproof garment can mean the difference between staying dry and getting soaked. If you spray your garment and see water beading, then you’re good to go. If the garment is wetting out, there’s no need to discard your jacket just yet. A few simple steps and you’ll be staying dry, and keeping money in your pocket. Before we start, it’s important to refer to the manufacturers instructions as directions may vary on specific products. Do not use fabric softeners or bleach, and do not dry clean. It’s a good idea to rinse the detergent tray to remove unwanted liquids. Close all zips and Velcro tabs before putting the garment in the washing machine. Use a small amount of detergent on a warm wash, with a low spin cycle. Rinsing twice will ensure the garment is detergent free. Finally, either tumble dry on medium heat, or hang to dry in shade to save energy. Once dry, throw your garment in the machine on warm for an additional 20mins, or iron at medium temperature. The heat can physically realign the water repellent finish molecules on fabric surface to increase its surface tension or reactivate the optimum water repellent effect. Now is a good time to run one more spray test to see if water repellency has returned. If not then you may need to re-proof with a spray or wash-in treatment. Whichever you choose, carefully follow the manufacturers instructions. If you take care of your waterproofs they’ll take care of you, which is good for the environment and your pocket. http://www.mec.ca/shop/cleaners-and-waterproofers/50544/

One of the most common questions we get is, "can I wash my gear and how?" Yes, you can!

CEO Chris Pew and Head of Marketing Shay Huskey are hanging out at Spin Laundry Lounge in Portland, OR explaining the few simple steps to washing and cleaning your waterproof breathable gear. Following this process will extend the life and maintain the performance of your outerwear.

Step by step -

1. Gather your dirty gear, your detergent and a washer and dryer.

2. For detergent, we recommend using a product specifically formulated for outdoor gear like Nikwax or a mild or eco-friendly detergent like Nelly's. These tend to not have a lot of additives or perfumes that will form a residue on the outside of your garment.

3. Next, before popping your garment in the washer you're going to want to close all the zipper openings or velcro tabs to make sure nothing tears during the wash cycle. Also, don't turn the garment inside out since you'll be cleaning the outside of the fabric.

4. Before washing, you're going to want to rinse the detergent compartment to clear away any leftover dirt or other residues.

5. Put your garment in the washer and add 100ML of Nikwax for 2 garments.

6. Select warm water (If using Nikwax), then push START!

7. Once the garment is done washing, pop it in the dryer on regular heat and dry until warm to the touch.

8. Once it's done drying, throw it on, get outside and keep it thumbs up!

If you take care of your gear it'll take care of you, which is good for the environment and your pocket.
