13 Mysterious Details on Everyday Objects Explained

We’re so used to seeing certain everyday objects that we often ignore their little but important details. Yet, some of the most ingenious ideas are often hidden right in plain sight. If you look closely at a tram's overhead lines, you'll see that its contact wires zigzag back and forth instead of going in a straight line. As the tram moves, the arm-like structure called a pantograph attached to its roof slides along the wire, and it wears down evenly. In a standard 52-deck of cards, the King of Hearts looks kind of strange. Some historians argue that the King of Hearts represents Ajax the Great while the Queen of Hearts is Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world. Ajax was one Helen’s admirers, but when she refused him, he chose to commit suicide by stabbing himself with his own sword. Have you ever noticed how many spikes are in the crown of the Statue of Liberty, and do you know what they represent? There are seven of them, and they represent the seven seas and seven continents of the world. Is your first thought when playing video game consoles to eat the cartridges? Well, apparently that’s what the manufacturers of the cartridges for the Nintendo Switch thought when they decided to coat them with a bitter-tasting non-toxic solution. Most people assume that the tiny hole on the tip of a pen cap is there to even out the pressure so that the pen doesn’t leak. In fact, it’s to save a person who might accidentally swallow the cap and choke on it. Their airway won't be completely obstructed. w:Period-after-opening symbol on a bottle of mouthwash: By I, Trounce, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2389837 Animation is created by Bright Side. To wear it down evenly, the wire isn’t installed strictly along the tram's straight path but in a zigzag instead. -There are 3 theories explaining why the King of Hearts is the only king who appears to be sticking his sword straight into his head. -When the one-, two-, five-, ten-, twenty-, and fifty-pence pieces are laid out together, they form The Royal Coat of Arms of the UK. -To find out how long you can safely use your makeup for, look for the little open jar icon called the PAO (Period After Opening). -The Statue of Liberty has seven spikes in her crown, and they represent the seven seas and seven continents of the world. -Book pages are often printed on large sheets of paper rather than on small individual ones. And if there isn't enough content to fill these sheets, there will be blank pages. -It turns out that each stripe in the toothpaste has different ingredients and purposes: the white part helps whiten your teeth and remove plaque, the blue (or green) gel has antimicrobial and breath-freshening effects. The red part contains crucial elements for healthy gums. -The bitter taste of the cartridges for the Nintendo Switch is meant to make children spit out the cartridge in disgust. -The numbers in the upper right corner of Heinz packets indicate which filling line the packet was filled on. - If a person accidentally swallows the ballpoint pen cap and chokes on it, their airway won't be completely obstructed thank to the little hole in it. -The little bumps on the “F” and “J” on the keyboard help experienced typists that can do their work without looking at the keyboard find “home keys” where the index fingers rest. -Indentations on the bottom of wine and champagne bottles are there to prevent because the bottom and sides of the bottle from cracking when the bottle is being corked. -Tiny holes in airplane windows help balance out the air pressure and prevent the windows from fogging up. 7. Lucky Number 57
Do you fiddle and faddle with the ketchup bottle at restaurants for what feels like hours just to get one little glob of ketchup to come out? If you’ve ever had to use a glass bottle of Heinz 57, you’ll know what we’re talking about, but luckily for all of us, there’s a simple solution to this problem, and it’s a lot easier than you may think. Instead of trying to shove things up into the bottle and scrape the ketchup out, just hold the bottle at an angle and tap on the embossed 57 on the side that’s located just below the neck. Repeat that for a few seconds, and pretty soon you should have a flowing river of ketchup! Thank us the next time you go to a restaurant and don’t end up giving up and eating plain old dry fries.

6. Even Heating
Leftovers can be a pain, with some of the food heating up in the microwave while the underside stays cold. Then you stir it and get most of it hot, but there’s still always that one section that didn’t quite get on board with what you were trying to do. Want to fix this heating problem? Just make a hole in the center of your food, and this will allow the food to be heated more evenly, and you shouldn’t have any more problems with those pesky cold spots! Go on, give it a try the next time you need to heat or reheat something. You’ll be glad that you listened to us.

5. Perfect Pasta
We have mentioned this before in previous videos, but in case you’re new here, we’ll tell you about it again! Have you ever sat and wondered why they would make a hole in your pasta spoon? Or perhaps you’ve come to the conclusion that it’s there for the water to drain? It does work to let water through, as most holes do, but it’s actually there for a different reason entirely! The hole represents the perfect amount of pasta for one serving and can help you keep your portion under control! If you regularly make more or less than you need, you can now have a measure as to how much you really need with this neat trick! Do it right from here on out!

4.No More Dents
Do you want to be able to cut your loaves of bread without denting the heck out of it while doing so? Well, this little hack is one of the simplest solutions to a problem on this list because all you have to do is flip the thing over and cut from the bottom. The flat surface of the bottom of the loaf of bread will allow you to cut through it, no problem, without the annoying dents that happen when you try to cut through the curved top. Easy.

3. Burger Basics
Alright, so we’ll admit, this probably isn’t one of the burger eating basics, but it should be. We should be taught how to hold a burger like this from a very young age; heck, it would have saved our parents lots of messes and frustration over wasted money. All you have to do is support four different areas on the bottom of the burger with your pinkies and thumbs, as you can see in this picture, and you can use your other hands for holding the top bun. This method helps to keep your meal intact and holds the ingredients inside in place! This is very smart, and it’s so obvious that we can’t believe we didn’t figure this one out for ourselves years ago.

2. Attention Ladies!
As you probably know, most people in America at least wear some form of underwear. Ladies, you may think that that little piece of extra fabric in yours was put in intentionally to act as a tiny pocket for storage, but if you believe that, you’re actually wrong. In underwear in general, to meet health standards, manufacturers need to put in a special layer of soft fabric so that nothing gets irritated. But the way that women’s underwear is made makes it impossible for companies to fully close the layer because the seams could lead to some unwanted discomfort. So they skip closing it entirely and it just so happens to form a little pocket inside, but that’s not what it was really meant for in the first place! The more you know.
